How many times had it been that he'd successfully avoided being assigned a Padawan? Eight? Nine? Of course, none of that mattered anymore. All those masterfully crafted speeches about why one of the Masters was more suited to train someone might as well have not happened. This was the worst case scenario of all worst case scenarios.

And that smug look Master Starkiller had given him when he spoke the words.

Teagan hadn't even argued. There was no argument that would have worked and the Council knew it. Or did they? Truth be told he hadn't even considered arguing. Did he actually believe he could finish the training Chase has started? Did he really think he was worthy enough to train someone as special as Daphne Lightheart?

"Kriff," he mumbled, not caring how rude it seemed. He brought his hands to his face and sat down in the waiting area. "Kriff, kriff, kriff."

While she shared his frustration, she also definitely didn't want to watch him beat himself up over it. That wouldn't help either of their situations.

Maybe, she told herself, it was for the best. Maybe the Force was trying to tell her something.

"It could be worse," she offered, but it came out more of a question than a confident statement. She flashed a smile that was weaker than usual and shrugged. "I mean, they could have just sent me back home."

"Or to the agricorps," he said sarcastically from behind his hands before letting them run down his face and fall into his lap. "Come on, Daphne. They'd revoke my Knighthood before they'd let you go."

"Look," he said, pushing off on his knees to stand. "Even if they had wanted to send you home I wouldn't have let them. Even if that meant requesting to have you as my apprentice. Besides, you said the temple's your home now," he added with a grin and a light flick on her arm.

That brought a real smile to her lips, her eyes brightening instantly. She wrapped her hand through his arm, starting to draw him down the hall away from the ominous looking doors.

"It is, and there's nowhere else I'd want to be. So we can focus on the positive! There's plenty I'm sure you can teach me, and now I have a great excuse to bug you about it every day, instead of feeling like I'm taking up your valuable time." Her eyes sparked with a teasing twinkle.
