Getting Sam to ditch was probably one of his better ideas. Dean looked up at the knock on the door and dropped his gun back into the duffel bag, then zipped it up and kicked it under the hotel bed before he went to open the chain lock and the deadbolt. He pulled the door open and leaned in the doorway, immediately sizing Lois up.

Well, the outfit was a downgrade, but he'd deal. Didn't stop her from looking ten kinds of smoking hot. A wily smile twisted his lips and he couldn't resist taunting her for just a second.

"Decided to come after all," He moved out of the doorway with the door as he opened it further, stepping aside to let her in. "Guess, as it turns out, you did have some faith in us. Shoulda known it was in there beneath all that tough chick attitude."

"I don't remember saying anything about faith," she countered, pushing past him with zero delicacy. "Maybe there's just not a lot to do in Smallville on a day like today." Or a day like... any day. Okay, that was an exaggeration. Things could get pretty weird around here.

She examined the hotel room, shamelessly sizing it up the same way he'd looked at her, hands on her hips.

"Doesn't look like you're planning to settle in any time soon."

"Wouldn't really be around in the first place if I made a habit of laying down roots everywhere a sheriff wanted me behind bars." He shrugged a little, one eyebrow cocking as he made the comment, giving it the implication of a question despite the fact that it was obviously telling. And, all right, maybe a little exaggerated to give him more of that rugged outlaw chic. Chicks dug it -- hell, this one obviously did. He smirked as he watched her move past, shamelessly sizing her up in return ( ... )

She swung her head back and caught his eyes definitely below the neck line, turning to face him again and deprive him of that particular view.

"Reporters," she repeated flatly, trying to stifle her own sense of surprise by just sounding skeptical. Ok, she was a little skeptical. He didn't really strike her as the type. She wasn't sure what 'the type' was anymore, since she'd never consider herself to be 'it' until she was knee-deep, but...

"So what's the story?" she asked casually, though she knew he'd evade it. If he was a reporter, he'd want to keep from being scooped - and if he wasn't, he'd managed to outmaneuver her with a cover that would give him a reason to keep his business close to his chest, without looking suspicious.

Dammit.

"I'm going to guess... The Sun style alien abductions are your usual forte."

The fact that the Talon still managed to operate with Lex and Lana both completely distracted from it was a miracle Chloe still hadn't completely figured out. But, as she headed down the stairs into the coffee shop proper from her apartment, pulling her purse up onto her shoulder, she cast a glance back at Martha Kent who was working dutifully at the counter. She gave her a smile and a wave, attention fixed on her instead of where she was walking. When she turned back to keep her eyes on where she was going, she had to step quickly out of the way of a seriously tall stranger.

Who, come to think of it, didn't seem all that strange.

"I'm sorry, I wasn't watching where I was -- " She finally got a good look at him and scrutinized, a lapse of hesitation making its way into her words. " … going. Hey, don't I know you?" As in, 'didn't I just see you in jail with my cousin?' All things considered, subtle and not necessarily accusatory seemed like the better way to go about interrogating her cousin's new pal.

"Uh, no, sorry, I--" Sam started to say automatically, since it was entirely unlikely that anyone here was going to know him. But when his gaze locked onto that little blonde head, the words froze in his mouth, his jaw flopping open for a moment.

"Oh, um." His levels of eloquence skyrocketed quickly. "I don't... know. I mean, do you?" He pulled at his collar nervously, glancing around before looking back at her and forcing a tight smile.

The look of recognition melted into a kind of amused look at his attempt to just bat the question back to her. Like maybe she'd dismiss it if he made it seem like he wasn't who she thought he was. But, Chloe had a keener eye than that; no thanks to plenty of reporting throughout pubescence.

"Yeah. I do. You're just a little harder to recognize without the figurative orange jumpsuit." She looked more interested in how he got out than getting him put back in, at least. Her eyes fell to the suit and then the opened laptop, and she couldn't help but let that amused look quirk into a full-blown smirk. "Posted bail and back to work already, huh? Must be important."

"Oh right, from the --" he said, feigning recognition now that it was obviously she wasn't going to be so easily brushed off the trail. He let out an exhale that turned into a nervous laugh, shaking his head and scratching the back of his head. "There was a misunderstanding. We were working undercover and ended up separated from our IDs. Just took a call back to Washington and they let us out."

He patted his laptop, drawing it mostly closed in the process. "So back to work."
