032. Sunset

The colors bled into each other, deep red to fiery orange to delicate pink to velvet purple to midnight blue, stars beginning to peek out from beneath the nearly night-blanketed sky. Clouds occasionally cascaded over the entire spectacle, reflecting and shimmering almost surreally. Bugs buzzed, and the frogs were beginning their nighttime symphony. Somewhere the faint whirr of an airplane miles above sounded before fading away.

Natsume stood on the dirt road down from the Fujiwaras’ house, holding a bag of assorted, last-minute groceries Touko-san needed for dinner. The fresh summer-dusk air had lured Natsume to offer to make the run to the nearby market when Touko realized she had forgotten some ingredients…despite the danger he knew going out this close to dark posed. As if he didn’t have enough trouble running from spirits during the day, at night it was always worse.

Always.

He watched the sun sink below the horizon.

It was beautiful, though. Natsume’s eyes softened and his lips curved upward. The rice weeds near the side of the road rustled in a breeze, and the frogs’ throaty ribbits rose in a crescendo for a moment. Natsume’s shadow stretched out long behind him, distorted to be nearly indistinguishable among the crawling, lengthening shadows of trees and weeds and grass.

Suddenly, a rustle and a snap.

At first, Natsume pays it no mind, continuing to stare dazedly at the sunset. Then, he notices that the frogs have stopped ribbiting, and only a lone cicada drones on.

Whipping his head around and smile vanishing, Natsume peers down the road to the left and to the right.

He is the only one in sight.

Tightening his grip on the plastic bag handles, Natsume quickly turns away and hastily makes his way down the road, heart hammering.

The sun drowns beneath mountains, offering a few last rays of glow before retiring for the night.
