Bruce was bored. Or, rather, he wished he could have the luxury of being bored. Instead, he was forced to make nice with the same people he raged against in the night: the fake, overconfident near-criminals, the ones too intelligent and wealthy to air their dirty laundry publicly but not too intelligent to get past his radar. Then again, who was? Bruce wasn't as egotistical as most people thought he was, but he knew his strengths well, and one of them was slaughtering, skinning, and bleeding (all figuratively, of course) people like these ( ... )

"You're lying," said Lex, smiling with an equal amount of charm as he shook his hand. "But that's business, so I'll let it slide. One thing, however, that I won't let slide, Mr Wayne, is the fact that your company's been employing illegal methods to undermine my efforts to expand LexCorp. Gibbons file sound familiar? It's not your job to blackmail my employees, Wayne. That's my prerogative."

The corners of Bruce's mouth twitched, but he didn't smile just yet. He took a long, fake sip of his champagne before replying.

"First of all, call me Bruce, Lex. Second of all, I have no idea what you mean. I'm only a figurehead, really. I don't make any important business decisions. That's what I employ people to do, isn't it? It would be such a bother doing all of that myself."

Bruce realized he was laying it on a bit thick and he grinned. "But enough about me. Everything with the Gibbons file went down nearly a month ago now, didn't it? How's LexCorp faring these days?"

Lex's eyes narrowed as he was presented this little speech. That grin was easy, vacant, and his stance nonchalant... it all screamed too loudly 'I'm an idiot.' Lex, however, knew better. There was no way that the owner of Wayne Enterprises could be as brainless as any other of the hundreds of socialites, while avoiding having his company bought out from under his feet. Something about Wayne just didn't quite click.

But Lex broke his gaze, turned away and took a glass of champagne from a passing waiter. There was nothing suspicious about Wayne, he reasoned. Lex was simply on edge; the place was full of idiots, anyway, and if Wayne associated with them voluntarily, there was only one conclusion to come to. Lex gave him a withering glance, the type he usually reserved for the blithering. "You know damn well how it's faring, Wayne, so you can wipe that smirk off your face. It's doing perfectly, notwithstanding your nefarious methods."
