Aug 11, 2024 23:37

I have a great aversion to owning stuff. It makes me feel trapped. But also it feels wasteful. I try to keep my ecological footprint small. So many people have so much stuff that they hardly ever or even never use. My rule of thumb is if i am not going to actively use something at least once a week, every week, i shouldn't buy it. And if i can't ( Read more... )

They've been around for a long time, but they've primarily been aimed at multi-mode white collar commuters, i.e. people who cycle from their house to the train station, then fold and board, unfold at the other end to "last mile" it to work, then fold and store it under their desk during the day. I think they're also popular in densely populated cities where people do not have the space in their apartments to store a full-size bike, and especially people who live in walk-up apartments where hauling a full-size bike up the stairwell might not even be viable.

Recently they've been getting more popular in the US outside of the bigger cities and bike nerd communities. E.g. this brand makes affordable ones aimed at "regular Americans" https://zizzo.bike/

I feel you on the use of things requirement. If it's gonna sit around, get rid of it or never buy it in the first place. when I moved here I treated myself to an e-bike because I got a $400 rebate on e-bikes and it was 40% off, so a 1800 bike was bought for 700. It opens up the world to ride. This town has been building bike lanes since the 70s, and arguably has some of the best bike transportation options in the U.S. It was one of the reasons we moved here. Your bike looks cute and fun!

Looking forward to hearing of your bike adventures.
