inspired by a swiftie

So, recently a friend of mine came out as a Swiftie. My sum total knowledge of Taylor Swift is that she is a country singer who had a song featured on the episode of Supernatural where Dean gets turned into a teenage version of himself, the punchline being that this famously gruff and manly classic rock listening bro is now listening to girly ( Read more... )

Ohh this sounds like a pleasant trip. Here it is -2 C right now and the night will bring more snow. Sigh. But with climate change at least it seldom remains cold and snowy for long....

My daughter used to listen to Taylor Swift. Now it seems like a lot more people my age are paying attention to her; not necessarily because of her music, but because of her activism, how well she treats her band and roadies, and how she tweaked the orange guy.

Kaosiung sounds like a great weekend away. Enjoy!

I'm not sure i can ever really stan a billionaire for being a nice boss, since really that should be the baseline for everyone, or really get excited about her activism, which seems like an afterthought compared to her business success... But having a friend explain it, i do now better understand why it is that a lot of women like to listen to her music. I think it's mostly about how her lyrics resonate with women who have dealt with shitty men in their lives, judgemental friends and family, coworkers who don't respect them etc. Perhaps the fact that she also isn't the most talented singer or dancer adds to the appeal in that fans can better identify with someone who isn't a virtuoso? In any case, there is this sense that she writes songs about stuff that the average woman can connect to, and does it unapologetically, which feels empowering. Even though i don't think it's for me, i think it's cool that people are so into it, and that it's helping women and girls bond with each other, especially in a media and political environment ( ... )

That absolutely should be the baseline for everyone, but Musk and lots of other billionaires are so far in the other direction that she seems like a saint in comparison. I think the fact that she comes across as a fundamentally decent and normal human being is a big part of her appeal.

I do find it surprisingly that the cold weather has hit Taipei before Busan considering just how much nearer the tropics you are. Then again, I think we have a different standard of what counts as cold!

But as you say, the rain plays a big part in it. Winters In Korea are cold but dry. In Busan it's now cool (highs of 13C today) but sunny and perfectly pleasant. I'll enjoy it while it lasts because the bitter cold of winter is due to set in soon.
