well, the way i've always been taught is by expanding when you breathe, then keeping the expansion by engaging the stomach muscles. so it is a pushing motion downwards and outwards (or upwards, if i'm in the upper register i guess) to support. i remember ludwig once saying something about it being impossible to push inwards with the stomach to support the sound. but i'm sure everyone is different.

hahaha, this is true. especially since he teaches high school band and I'm sure most of his clarinet players fit that description.
