I didn't watch the video. Instead, I saw screenshots that were taken of the complete video including sections that weren't shown on TV. Those screenshots upset me so badly that I felt off-kilter for the next few days. Emotionally, I couldn't comprehend any of it. How can one person do that to another? What did it feel like for the victim? What kind of emotional state-of-mind would make a person capable of such an inhumane act?
I felt guilty for seeing the pictures, too, like I had snooped around to see something that should never have been seen.
The human psyche was not built to withstand witnessing that type of cruelty and torture. If you haven't seen the full video yet, save yourself the mental and psychological abuse and don't see it. No matter what people say, don't do it.
There's no way I'd watch any more of it. I think you're right - the human mind was not built to process this type of thing. And to think that the video was beeing shown to teenagers in school...
That's why I returned your copy of 'Zombie' (by Joyce Carol Oates) unread. We hear about/see enough violence in news/movies to already to damage our psyches, that I've made a decision to not voluntarily add to that quota. My nightmares consist of my basement wall falling in, and I hope to keep it that way.
The American prisoner who was beheaded on camera in Iraq a couple of weeks ago....the video has been all over the internet. Just ignore and move on - really.
sorry for the babbling....baldsugMay 24 2004, 10:51:29 UTC
As appalled as I am about the Abu Grahib photos and reports, I know it's nothing compared to what was done to Nicholas Berg and I think that was the point. That video shows a level of ambivalence for human life and contempt for an enemy that I can't even begin to fathom.
That's why Americans do not mistreat prisoners, that's why we have rules and we should not be stepping over them - because we are not prepared (thank god)to go to that same place. For all our military technology and resources, that is a weapon they have over us and it needs to be respected and loathed, not adopted.
Abu Grahib was a toe being dipped in waters that these guys bathe in every day. I am so furious at both the bastards that did that to Nicholas Berg as well as the idiots at Abu Grahib that "played" at being cruel. Now that we've seen what the bad guys look like, we need to get back to showing them what good guys look like, or we'll never be free of it.
