I think this list is probably representative of books people had to read when they were in school and liked/remembered. When they did the Nations Favourite Poems they were mostly ones people had memorised for school.

I noticed most of the k kids didn't bold the childrens' books that I know so well (that there are children who don't know about the Faraway tree etc is mind boggling!).

If it's any consolation, Beloved is on pretty much every reading list I've seen (I still haven't read it though)
