So this probably isn't the time when I should point out that "In God We Trust" has only been our motto since the 1950s, that we don't have a national language or my personal opinion on the death penalty?

It's not just "In God We Trust", the specific term. Try 4th July 1776 with the Declaration of Independence: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created
equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness." Just an example.

We may not have English as an official language, but we were colonized by the English. If we were colonized by the Germans, we would be speaking German.

Now, I'm not for the death penalty in every case, but I believe there are certain things that warrant it. Brutal rape/murder, for instance. Let the punishment fit the crime.
