Each week, I enojy finding something unique to discuss as I feel that there are so many interesting examples out there. I stumbled across this one at www.poemhunter.com when the title caught my eye. For me this poem is about the life cycles that we all encounter during the span of our time on earth. The different things that the girls come in contact with are like the different experiences that we have during life. I think that he is using the ocean as a metaphor for the passing of time and as something that can literally wash away unpleasent and pleasent memories from our minds over time. Through the experience of allowing our lives to be cleansed, we can truly learn about our own self and speciffically how the people or event that remain in our memories have shaped our outlook; by washing them away, we can see that is left behind in our own being.

Hey Amy,
In response to your question, I feel that what we find in the sea is not really ourselves, but something that forces or pushes us to realize what we are made off. The sea is like a whole new world to many. Many of us really haven’t explored the sea to find what treasures it possesses; therefore the sea represents the uncertain and the adventurous things that life has to offer. So although we many sometimes feel like we have lost ourselves in this chaotic world, we are not truly lost. All we need to do is take chances and we’ll realize the true self that exists within each of us.

I feel that the introductory line to this poem hooks the reader right away. With its use of alliteration, it gives the sense of a playful theme and subject. I found that when reading the poem, I gained a sense of each aspect. It is interesting to think that all the girls are one in the same. It is a unique thought that I would have never looked at myself. Interesting interpretation.
