2009 can only get better

My year got off to a rocky start, unfortunately. While we were out of town to celebrate New Year's Eve with my husband's family, our house was broken into. This is the first time we've ever been robbed and it was a frightening experience for all of us ( Read more... )

That's totally crappy. When my oldest was maybe two thieves broke into our garage and stole our bikes. We felt violated from that. I can imagine how much worse it must be for you with the target having been your house.

I'm vastly relieved you took your laptop. And that your cat is fine.

I hope your sense of safety returns asap.

Thanks, Karen. Yes, the fact that strangers were roaming around our house while we were away really got to us.

And I am also vastly relieved that my laptop and cat are fine. I would have lost a huge amount of writer correspondence and manuscripts that weren't backed up after revisions.

Oh Amy. We had our cottage broken into and it left me feeling unsafe for about a year, but that feeling fades away. We also had a door kicked in - so hard it sent the hardware (knob and stuff) into another room. Take heart, you will feel normal again.

They kicked in our door very forcefully, too. Wood splinters and parts of the door frame were scattered all the way up our hallway.

Good to know I'll feel normal again. We're getting an alarm system installed, but I have the feeling we'll be moving from our neighbourhood in the next year or two...

That's a horrible start to the year, Amy. I can't imagine what sort of people would steal kid's belongings like this.

Having been broken into years ago, I can second Barb's comment that you do eventually feel normal again.

Have you thought about a burglar alarm? We have one, not because we have anything really valuable but because we have things that are impossible to replace, like some Chinese calligraphy in honour of my father-in-law.

Yes, we're getting some online pricing for burglar alarms right now. It would be nice to have something to also monitor carbon monoxide levels and fire while we're out of the house.

Oh, Amy, I am so sorry that this happened to you and your family but am *so* thankful you're all safe. *hugs*

Thanks, Maggie. Once we ge through the insurance hassles, I'm sure we'll feel even more back to normal.

Such a rotten thing to have happen. My home has never been robbed, but I've been robbed in person twice. I felt haunted and jumpy and miserable for quite awhile afterwards, but it does pass. People told me it was a natural reaction, so if you're still feeling nervous, etc., it will eventually go away. I hope they catch the creeps and give them a good dose of their own medicine.

Thanks, Barbara. I felt very suspicious and paranoid for days afterward, waking up at every noise and constantly getting up to look out the windows. It's good to know the nervousness will eventually go away.
