Jennifer Carpenter is the best thing about Dexter, hands down.
I know Michael C Hall gets all the raves and yeah, he's good, but Carpenter is what kept me slogging through the navel-gazing tripe that was Season 6. She's not the most nuanced actress, but when she's on camera she drags you into Debra Morgan's terrified and terrifying decent down the spiral without the voiceover crutch that Hall gets to rely on. Anyone who gave up watching, I hope they came back for the recent season because it's worth it. It was also nice not to have an overarching villian. Dexter is best when he's pushing his personal limits, not acting as a more murderous Batman. This meant that the pacing slowed down and it felt like the show was wandering around and losing focus for an episode or two, but it slowly came together in a pointed and meaningful way.
I'm kinda glad I decided to pay for Showtime. Now to catch up on Homeland, since I heard that's a phenomenal show.
