That's right... blame black people. Joking. Jews voted overwhelmingly against Prop 8, which I'm very happy about. One argument I've seen, which makes sense but I'm not sure I agree with fully is to make "marriage" a wholly religious thing, untouched by the government (ie separation of church and state). If you want to be recognized by the state, you would get a civil union, whether homo- or heterosexual. An interesting concept, but it would never catch on.
Why not? It sounds like a really good idea and marriage was a wholly religious thing to start with. If everyone has the same legal rights when they bind, then we're just arguing semantics.
A marriage is, to the government, not a religious matter at all. Calling something a Civil Union vs. a marriage WOULD be a moral/religious judgement imposed by the government, where previously no religious angle had existed. And the government is constitutionally prevented from doing that.
didn't the mormons flood the state with millions of dollars in "yes on 8" money?
The nice thing that my gay friends point out to me (and the reason I am not as angry about all this) is that it WILL happen eventually. No one has ever been on the winning side of discrimination, in the end.
It WILL happen eventually but it infuriates me, because as a Christian, PROP 8 GOES AGAINST JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING I believe in. Soooo of course it will happen but this should have never happened in the first place, much less as a result of people designating homosexuality as a sin.
I think the Mormon churches were sent letters to read to congregations telling them to get involved monetarily and personally in helping Prop 8 pass. I'm not solely blaming the Mormons but I'm not letting them off the hook.
I'm still standing by only those who have never sinned should have voted for Prop 8 based on a religious stance and if all men sin, unless we're willing to ban marriage between those who don't become fruitful and multiply as well, there's no point in singling out sins. Prop 8 doesn't mean you have to agree with gay marriage, it just means you realize there's no room for discrimination in constitutions throughout the USA
( ... )
Also, (look at me go, I promise I'll stop). If you really think you were a close-minded liberal before, then it's good you're trying to see the other side. But just because you vehemently disagree with the other side doesn't mean you're close-minded. I have a ridiculous amount of friends and family members coming at me from the other side on every issue and while I can see where they're coming from, I can also see where their argument is flawed. Not that I'm like, super-empower Blamy! because clearly you know where you're coming from, but just because my aunt and I both disagree with getting abortions doesn't mean I'm any less borderline furious when I discuss how flawed her argument is for trying to force pro-life legislation.
I literally could not understand the other side before. Now, it just makes me sad inside, but I'm currently dealing with the fact that the people who support the other side are not necessarily bad people for believing what they do.
I mean, I literally still can't understand the other side, I can understand the beliefs but not putting it into action like that but yeah, few people are ever really out to do harm.
