The sadness of the show is that so much the trouble happens because of the dysfunction and communication gulfs between the boys and John. and the beauty of the show is that this dysfunction and miscomminication isn't a plot device but deep part of their characters that have lifelong roots. And the writers SHOW them to us. So when Dean makes a decision not to tell something to Sam or to do something for him, even when it's wrong, we at least can understand the decision even as we see them careering towards more disaster.
I always feel for Dean caught between Sam and John.
