Okay, so technically it's not them but Ms. McCaffrey who has disappointed me.

I'm really low on reading material and can't get to the library, so I started digging through old books. Ah ha! The BOMC edition of the Dragonriders. I've read them a million times but it's been a few years, so what the heck.

Heinlein is one of the worst, not only is he sexist but he is also incredibly right wing and seems to always equate the state with evil. All his books are thinly disguised propaganda.

E E Smith also treats women badly in his Lensman books.

S F and Fantasy are full of sexism.

I just found this post, and I'm kicking myself now. *headdesk*

Okay, well, some of the lighter Heinlein stuff I would recommend, like 'Have Spacesuit Will Travel', 'Citizen of the Galaxy', 'Farmer in the Sky' (my personal fave). But they should wait til early teens, when they're old enough to understand the socialogical differences. The heavier stuff like 'Starship Troopers' and 'Stranger in a Strange Land' should wait til college, though. That's when I read them, at least.

One SF writer that I would strongly recommend for teens, though, is L. Neil Smith. 'The Probability Broach' is still one of my favorite books of all time, and there isn't a misogynist in sight in that one. Another great writer is David Weber; the Honor Harrington books are a must read if you have a girl who loves SF, she's a genuine war hero and there are tons of strong women in those ( ... )

Up
