Humans are just more calculating. There is not anything that draws a distinct line between us and the rest of the animal kingdom. Many of the other higher primates are capable of similar kinds of aggression and apathy towards their own and others. Chimps wage war on other chimpanzee troops. Male Orangs attack and rape female orangutans while the victim's child hangs onto it's mother and screams the whole time.

Humans exceed animals in the amount of compassion that we exhibit and the amount of apathy that we exhibit. It just depends on the context of the individual. Putting an animal down is often the most humane thing to do when it's severely injured and has no hope of surviving. It takes great strength and courage to do so.
