WAAC Officers Under Hair Dryers
A line of Women's Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC) officers sit purposefully under hair dryers at a beauty parlor. Toni Frissell captured them documentary-style, in which every woman remains oblivious to the camera except the one nearest to it, who can't help but smile. The photograph appeared in the July 1, 1943, Vogue.

Relaxing Massage
The ultimate pampering experience is the focus of this image by Frances McLaughlin-Gill. A woman lies on a massage table while a masseuse gets to work. The relaxing image appeared in the October 15, 1948, Vogue.

Getting Her Runway Ready
Famed hairstylist Guillaume works intently in this Constantin Joffé photograph. A model sits patiently as the stylist and his team exact a perfect coif for a runway show. This behind-the-scenes image appeared in the June 1, 1949, Vogue.

Under the Dryer
A model takes matters into her own hands in this photograph by Constantin Joffé. Although she sits underneath a hair dryer, she makes best use of her time by applying mascara while waiting for her coiffure by famed stylist Guillaume to dry. This cheeky, retro image appeared in the June 1, 1949, Vogue.

Having Her Hair Set
The ritual of a standing hair appointment is documented by Frances McLaughlin-Gill in this photograph. A woman has her hair set by a dapper stylist. We cannot glimpse her face, so he becomes the focus. His intent expression and careful gestures suggest a sense of intimacy between the stylist and his client. The image appeared in the October 15, 1948, Vogue.

Getting a Perm
This Sante Forlano photograph, which appeared in the July 1964 Glamour, is an amusing portrait of one of the era's most ubiquitous beauty trends-the permanent wave. Here, Margaret Scott of Brooklyn, NY submits herself to the treatment. As only the back of her head is shown, one can't help but imagine her facial expression.

Last Minute Touches
Constantin Joffé captured Mrs. Thomas Phipps applying makeup. We see her best reflected through the mirror of her beauty case. In regarding herself, she also regards the viewer. The unconventional photograph appeared in the June 1, 1951, Vogue.

Trading Beauty Secrets
Two women are photographed in profile. With a mirror between them, one observes as the other applies lipstick with a brush. The sense of placelessness and lack of discernible fashion lends Leombruno-Bodi's image a timeless quality. It appeared in the April 1, 1960, Vogue.

White Sunglasses & Red Lipstick
Red and white and blue all over. Model Muriel Maxwell wears a striking pair of white sunglasses while applying lipstick. She wears a red, white and blue turban and holds a red-and-white striped bag. This image has a painterly quality due to the muddy background and flawless composition. Horst P. Horst's photograph appeared in the July 1, 1939, Vogue.

Primrose House Ski Pack
This still life encompasses all of a woman's winter necessities: sunglasses, lipstick, compact, comb, and lotion, housed conveniently in a small bag. The elegant composition, by John Rawlings, appeared in the February 1, 1937, Vogue.
