Believe it or not, cheese graters work really well. Stretch the part of your jeans you want to distress over a hard surface like over the corner of a table, and rub the cheese grater over it.
For the knees, first put on the jeans and mark where you want to make the cut. Too low or too high will look weird so take your time with this step. Then take the jeans off agin (dont try ripping them with them on!!) and use razors or scissors to make a small hole in the corner where you want the rip to stard. Use your hands to rip it across the knee. Take a hairbrush, something like a boars hair hairbrush or with thick bristles, and brush around the cup to fray it. Toss it in the wash, dry it, and viola.
You might want to practice these tricks on a pair that you don't really love first.... when I did this the 1st time I kinda ruined a really nice pair of jeans because I made the knee hole too long across and it doesnt look cute at all. But after a few tries I've got it right.
