google maps does this animation thing now where it blows up or shrinks down your map to higher or lower resolution while it's loading the images for the new zoom level when you zoom in or out ( Read more... )

Looks to me like this only happens when you zoom by a single step. Either clicking the +/- buttons, or dragging the little widget just a single notch. I usually zoom by dragging the widget, and I drag it more than one notch at a time, which causes it to just pop and not use the image scaling. It took me a while to figure out how to make it do the image scaling at all!

Playing with doing either method makes me think it's no faster or slower using the scaled image method vs. the popping method. In fact, I think the scaling method is better as at least you can make out general features of the map rather than just looking at big gray squares.

yeah, like i said, i think it just 'feels' slower. Though it may actualy be slower in my browser/system.
