Several weeks ago I was informed that, due to my lack of consideration for the question of intent, my moral system was "deeply flawed."

I couldn't help thinking of the person who told me that today when I heard Ha'aretz' Zev Schiff's writing off of civilian deaths in Beirut as "collateral damage" on Morning Edition ( Read more... )

That's.... a rather staggeringly rude thing to say to someone.

although I'll admit I'm tempted to say it of those who use the phrase "collateral damage," regardless of whose side they're on.

in the context of the discussion i would have categorized it as merely close-minded and obnoxious, not quite "staggeringly rude."

Even so, I would like to go on record as saying - and you and I have gone a few rounds on thw "responsibility/intent" thing ourselves - that I believe it to be categorically untrue. "[C]lose-minded and obnoxious" seems a reasonable summation of someone who would dismiss a moral system because it didn't agree with theirs (or with what they thought it "should" be).
