Geneticists are creating human-animal hybrids just like Bush said they would! And the worst part is, they're creating them in the fossil record, which as we all know is the source of much heresy. Heh heh heh.

If they'd already split into two separate species then by definition they couldn't produce fertile offspring. I'm not buyin' it. Not saying they didn't have sex with each other - chimps and baboons will have sex with each other - but I don't see how they could have diverged so much morphologically and still have similar enough chromosomes to interbreed.

That's circular reasoning. It's not that they can't breed because we named them different species, it's that we named them independent species because we *thought* they didn't interbreed. If it becomes accepted that they did in fact breed and produce fertile offspring then the two species will probably be combined into one.

Not being able to interbreed is a sufficient but not necessary condition for being separate species - dogs and wolves can produce fertile offspring, for example. And maybe also polar bears and grizzlies... hehe.

The beefalo and the wolphin are also fertile, as is a cross between a king snake and a corn snake.
