YAY I got 5 packages mailed off this morning. I only have another 6 to send, since I'm going home to MN. 25 people on my list this year, counting "everyone at the office" as one person, which is pretty exciting. I'm almost done shopping, too. Whew!

Several people have asked me what I want - the number one thing is donations to charities. Here's aRead more... )

Until I read your list of charities, I didn't really know about the difference between the ACLU and the ACLU Foundation. Interesting.

Thanks for the Equinox Theatre plug! (And donations to Equinox are tax-deductible.)

I got a package notification from you (in a round-about way) this morning. Exciting! I would like to send you something, but I don't think I'll have time untl I get back to SF on the 15th - so it may arrive late. I hope you don't mind. I owe you a bday present, too, of course.

Relatedly, I have a lovely collection of fridge-magnets, and I was wondering if you'd like to inherit a few? I'm trying to lighten up a bit, and I've gotten rid of tons of stuff. I wouldn't want them to go lonely and scared to a strange home, and our fridge in England is the size of a breadbox, and mom's isn't magnetic. (I know!)

Man, I've been meaning to email you for ages. I watched a Timothy Dalton version of Jane Eyre last weekend! It was about 87 hours long, which was great, but for being as long as it was they still cut some strange things out, and I don't think they represented Jane's internal life very well. The actress playing Jane was 30 if she was a day, so her whole "I'm 18" schtick was... unconvincing. But she was pretty good. I had ( ... )

ZOMG we must see this!! I was IN hyde park when I was in London; I can't believe I failed to cast my eyes upon this wonder of civilization. I had no idea that the Duke of Wellington was so popular with the ladies; I'm going to have to go to the "library" and do a little "historical research", if you know what I mean.

I would love any magnets that you would care to toss my way, and don't worry about sending me other presents; I seriously don't need anything, and would never in a million years even contemplate minding a package from you being "late". (Is there ever a bad time for a package from you? No! Never!)

Sometimes I mind actors being too pretty for their characters (especially when, say, Elizabeth Bennet is prettier than Jane), but other times, I figure that love is so strange and biased, that when an actor appears too pretty, it is just that the director has decided to show him/her through the adoring eyes of a lover. Or soemthing. You're right, Rochester should be near-ugly and foreboding, but as long as he broods well...

The Wellington/Rochester connection comes from Rebecca Fraser's The Brontes: Charlotte Bronte and her Family (1988). A cheeky cartoon by George Cruikshank, "Making Decent!!" appears reproduced on p. 259 of the second edition of Linda Colley's Britons: Forging the Nation 1707-1837 and is where I found the incident recounted. It's she who footnotes Fraser, above ( ... )

Rochester without brooding is like a day without sunshine. It is like fudge without hot. It is like grass without stains. It is like a library without books. It is like an internet without Al Gore. It is absurd! It is like our trip to see Achilleston without a folding lucite candelabra. It is absurd, and it cannot be allowed. We must protest, and voiciferously. Our screeching haraunges must ascend to the very heavens.

Nada without fishnets, however, is like a fish without a bicycle. It's not as bad as it sounds, but it's not necessary to see either. :)

Douglas, I feel so bad, but I got you a present, and you must take it and bathe in enjoyment of it, if only for a few hours, and then you may give it away.

You should make a post anyway! I always love reading about other people's favorite charities. It takes a while to develop your own personal portfolio of giving - I'm still not satisfied with mine. It's too weak in the arts, intellectual life, and the environment. So I'd like to see what other people prioritize.
