Wormholes and Haircuts

Perhaps I am not well versed in modern science fiction literature (have you noticed how often words like "perhaps" or "maybe" are used to convey certainty?), but I have a feeling that there is a very important aspect of life in a future technologically super-advanced setting, which is not being dealt with in a half-satisfactory manner ( Read more... )

1. No, this is not what I am going to say. I am going to say that one has to know how to cut his hair, it's not as easy as it looks, and also is time-consuming, requires a convenient place (forget the closed TV, just a place where you can cut your hair without being afraid it will spread all over your apartment). And well - a wormhole seems like a useful device to have at home, and once they become as cheap as cd-burners, everybody will buy them for different purposes. But what the hell should one build at home a special system of mirrors or a closed-circuit TV for, if he can go once a month to a barber?!

2. "it's better to know the answer" is due to you, pz and myself.

1. I am not sure you understood me.. with wormholes you wouldn't need any mirrors, since the light coming from your head into the wormhole will reach your eyes! And I'm sure hair disposal would be simpler in a world with wormholes.. one just has to be creative enough.

2. I didn't think it was an honor to have credit for this theorem.. but it's all yours (and pz's) if you (and him) want it :)

1. True. But one should still learn how to cut his hair, shouldn't he? I mean, how many people do you know that fix their cars themselves? And if haircuts are as simple as you say they are, why doesn't any husband in the world cut his wife's hair and vice versa? Everyone can learn, of course, but it takes time, and time is money, money that one would rather pay a professional...

2. Everyone has to take responsibility for theorem he proves. So whether or not pz wants the credit is not relevant.

Wonderful idea. One of these magnificent ideas that strike me with their simplicity. Upon first readng it sruck me as something so obvious and natural - a work of genius.

No fascinating applications here, but I wonder what would happen if you replace a "hall of mirrors" with a "hall of wormholes". Not only in Versailles, of course. How would the shooting scene in the "Lady from Shanghai" look like?
