I wrote my discussion and conclusions the week before I handed in (in fact, much of the conclusions at three in the morning of the day I handed in). They took six months to get around to examining me (five hour oral defence). Almost no changes required to what I thought were the shonky discussion/conclusion chapters, but my god, the screeds of typographical nitpics (and not actual errors, just not liking the shapes, colours, symbols, size, etc, of most of my figures). Never let them put a retired journal editor in as one of your examinerss - he had little issue with the science, but boy, did he hate my writing and markup styles. three or four months fiddly mucking about to get it done. Grrr.
