Dad and I went up to visit with Mother today. She's completely out of it--where once she was responding to outside voices, at this point, she is no longer aware of them

Agreed, the one and only time my mum responded when she was in hospital for the last time, was when I said. "Love you mum!"...just for second she was lucid, and smiled.

That instinct overrides everything.
