haha question was, basically: Are Marvel's big event books easy enough to get into for a non-comic reader that they won't need any backstory?

I think it depends on the storyline because for example, Siege requires some prior knowledge but your example of Civil War was a good one for not much info required. House of M could go either way and same for Secret Invasion. My only real experience with DC is than damn Blackest Night and I'm still confused as to what the fuck went on there.
