Shiloh sounds like a great friend to have around. I've never really had a pet I was very close to. The only cats I have had were basically wild and were never really around. Then, I had fish who were amusing to watch did last too long and are rather worthless for the whole cuddly factor. Having a pet who basically becomes a family member really can enrich your life. There are so many benefits to having a companion to go through life with you.

As far as letting him go outside: if he is happy who the hell cares? I think I may have made mention of "longer life span" once. But honestly, who cares about length when quality is all that really matters? Make your fuzzy prince happy. Tis part of the joy and experience.
