At the National Ignition Facility in Livermore California, scientists are aiming to build the world's first sustainable fusion reactor by 'creating a miniature star on Earth'.

SQUEE! I actually got to tour that crazy place with some of my coworkers. That building is what led a friend of mine to joke that LLNL actually stands for "Lasers, lasers, nothin' but lasers" instead of Lawrence Livermore National Labs. :)
