The spell goes wrong, somehow. Morgana's not sure what happened, it went wrong so quickly, and then there was just pain and numbness spinning their way through her head and her body. She thinks she might be bleeding, from the warm wet feeling at her stomach, chest, the way her fingers feel numb and her legs feel so, so very far away, but she's tired too, and she can't lift her head to look. She tries to press a hand to her chest, assess the damage by feel, but she's not sure she manages any of it. The world is dropping away precariously, and she can't concentrate, and it's all happening so fast, so terrifyingly fast--and why can't Morgana feel her hands? She can feel her magic, untangling itself at last, but she can't feel her hands

It's not a cliché because there hasn't been time enough for clichés yet. Beacons are warnings, notice. They don't draw you home; they don't show you the safe way, free of rocks, like lighthouses, because there aren't any yet to draw the comparison from. Beacons top walls, keeps, fortifications. They don't guide--they warn of coming danger, armies on the move.
So Gwen is nothing like a beacon, because beacons warn you of others, not about yourself. Beacons have nothing to do with losing one's way. In a few centuries, Gwen might be, but by then it won't matter because they'll both be long dead. Instead, Morgana is left with no comparison--but that doesn't mean she doesn't know what Gwen does.
Gwen found her when she was lost, though she herself had not yet realized that the path she'd been taking had turned so drastically, and Gwen had drawn her safely home, shining like a light in the dark and confusion.

Drunk on fever and flesh, Morgana steals another kiss, just to drink in the sounds Gwen makes when she does. Intoxicating’s not the right word for it, though it’s undeniably heady-it makes Morgana feel almost feverish, like the time she caught that chill when she was fourteen and no one in the court, not even Gaius was entirely sure she’d recover. She’s burning up, crackling and sizzling from the inside out, and the only that even remotely helps to sooth it is the same thing that fuels the fire-more, more, more of Gwen, of her touch, of her lips, of her breath and her lungs. More of her legs and the sounds she makes, and the wet, wet sensation of her cunt under Morgana’s fingers. More of her hair, and her breasts, and her perfect face as it looks up at her, flushed and wanting

Morgana's out on second chances. She doesn't like the idea, the principle, the thought that you can get a shot to try over again when you've messed things up so very much already. The snag there, is that she keeps giving people second chances anyway. She'd nearly killed Uther once. She'd struck a bargain with some bandits and lured Uther out to her father's grave, stood above him with a short sword in her hand, and in the end, she killed the bandit instead. She'd seen the look on Uther's face, the way he'd bought her story hook, line, and sinker about wanting to go with him to her father's grave, just like they used to. She hadn't been able to kill him then, even though he was a danger to everyone around him, blind and psychopathic, and she knew it. She knew it even then. She couldn't do it, and look where that second chance had gotten them

"Never change," she whispers into the nape of Gwen's neck, hair pulled back away from the skin so Morgana can tuck her nose just there, curled around Gwen as she sleeps. Morgana will never be a quiet sleeper, even with the bracelet helping keep away the nightmares, but with Gwen close beside her, she sleeps through the night. In the morning, Gwen will ask her how she slept, and she will tell her that she'd never had a more restful night of sleep. Gwen will smile and run a finger along the pattern of the bracelet around Morgana's wrist, knowing, thankful. Morgana doesn't believe it's the amulet any more; she knows it's Gwen, better healing than magic
