Your reasoning on the "atheist" label is spot-on. My friend Doug Krueger (who has written a book on atheism) and a lot of others make the same argument. I see/hear it used a lot not only on internet forums but also in real life conversations with curious people (and religious nutjobs alike) who talk to our freethinker group. This is one reason I like to call myself a non-theist, although it would be nice to not have to be defined in terms of what we don't believe...

It is such a pity that people have to fight arguments defending the non-existence of something. Whatever happened to the philosophy behind 'innocent until proven guilty (or real)'?
