Creepy middle-aged man at the train station tonight, sat down too close to me on the bench. Asked me what I was reading. And really, what's wrong with self-indulgent reading? It hurts no-one. It does not affect your health or intelligence, or prevent you from leading a productive life. Indeed, I am firmly of the opinion that a good dose of escapism is helpful in leading a useful life - if we are immersed in the 'real world' all the time, it is easy to become depressed and feel as though there is no point doing anything, since global warming / running out of oil / the nuclear war / the bird flu / etc are all out there waiting to destroy Life As We Know It and kill people. I can't live with that in my head all the time without going mad. A bit of escapism and the odd happy ending are a refreshing relief and make me more able to try to do my 2 cents worth towards preventing or ameliorating any of the above awful possibilities...

I rember thinking I need to covince people ie politicans that this sort of mental health conservation needs more funding. *grin* i may steal your arguements..you tend to be more um articulate n all.
