Interesting. One of the academics in my department (Geoff Stahl) delivered a couple of seminars here at Vic about 6 months ago that were parallel in content to that hipster article, though he looked specifically at hipsters in Montreal. While he didn't generalize beyond the socio-political context of Montreal hipsters, iirc he arrived at a very similar argument.

I'll soon be delving deep into Distinction myself, so it's useful to see how Bourdieu is being applied at the moment.

I've never read it myself, but it sounds like it could be worth a look for my studies on ancient societies.
