Written in ten minutes. A bit heavy-handed, but meh.
I thought it'd be an interesting twist on an already infamous scene. XD
He does not think of her when he opens the door. Nor when the worm grabs him and pulls him out. Instead, his mind is full of his need to set things right. To make amends to all his Resistance comrades who have fallen because he made the mistake of trusting a traitor.
His attempt of courageous self-sacrifice is foiled by a fierce grip and even fiercer cry. As a moment of doubt causes him to twist around and take a double-handed grip on the Mask, he catches a glimpse of her behind the young drake who's been his friend since childhood and the behemoth whom he's only known for a short while. And his heart twists to see the bright blue eyes wide with the knowledge of what he's trying to do. And why he's doing it.
Forgive me. But we both know I was beyond saving. My sins are too great.
He makes sure his last words are for his successor. But as he lets go of his peoples' last hope, his final thoughts are of her and her alone.
Beloved...
