.hack//G.U. vol 2 Reminisce.
Yes, I finished it! No, I don't want to hear how I've "already" finished it. You can finish it in a week, too, if you're willing to forego sleep, food, and having a life!
Here are my spoiler-free thoughts:
I seem to remember, in //Roots, it being mentioned that there are seven known Lost Grounds. I would pretty much swear that there are a lot more than seven in //Reminisce. All of them have beautiful background tracks.
The voice acting! OMG the voice acting! It is teh awesome in this game! Much better than in //Rebirth, and what was in //Rebirth was not too shabby. Even Atoli's cringe-inducing voice is no longer truly cringe-worthy.
Haseo's voice is AMAZING.
Except for when he casts Repth.
He and Pi? When they cast Repth, both of them sound like a goose getting stepped on. WTF is up with that? What was wrong with the Repth sound clips from the first game which, while not something you'd want to listen to on endless repeat, at least didn't make it seem like they were getting a wedgie?
Crimson VS - an unexpectedly fun little game. For something that you don't even, per se, play, it was worth a whole lot of amusement.
Subtext? WE DON'T NEED NO STINKIN' SUBTEXT!! Subtlety is for the weak!
There were three or four times that I was sure I was about to hit the final boss fight before I actually did. It was pretty cool, really ... just when you think you're reaching the end of the game, it turns out that you're not.
Actual combat is made slightly more complicated than it was in //Rebirth, but not by a whole lot, and not to the extent that you will find it difficult to pick up. I tell you though ... even with heavy abuse of the skill trigger, it is HARD to get three separate weapon skills up!
Weapon skills, in case you were interested, max out at 20 in this game.
There are two new styles of area - an outdoors, and a dungeon. Both of them are interesting to look at the first time you encounter them, but neither of them is going to keep you excited, or make you want to explore your surroundings just to see what's around the corner. Amusingly, the game designers seem to recognize that the lack of variety in the areas is a problem, because it comes up in the in-game community forums.
Sad that they didn't actually DO anything about it.
I'm not going to say much about the plot, because I promised this would be spoiler-free. I will say that there are a couple of points where you just have to shrug and accept what's been tossed at you ... the good and amazing points of the plot more than make up for the occasional thin spots.
So now I have to play it again. I skipped out on a lot of the optional sidequests in order to see what was going to happen. This time I'll play through more slowly and do stuff like kill the doppelganger again.
ETA Something I just remembered upon restarting the game.
I sure hope you saw //Roots, and played //Rebirth. Because the summary of the "story so far" at the beginning of the game is ... uh ... really bizarrely abbreviated. I don't think anybody would be able to comprehend what's going on based on the recap alone.
