Come on, you didn't think this would end with my last post, did you?

Of course you didn't. You know me better than that.

My intent with this post is thus:

I mentioned this in the last one, but I will go over it in more detail here. I said that it was perhaps not surprising or ironic that asingulargirl and sutlers were the ones who decided to be the fandom quality ( Read more... )

Given secret #2 on here, I am highly skeptical of any 'apology' coming from the offices of ASG or Sutlers.

I’m not trying to perpetuate the wank here. I don’t usually comment in the journals of people I don’t know just to disagree with them, and I’m pretty sure ASG just wants all of this to die out, but I feel the need to say something.

Talented people are assholes all the time. I realize that you personally may never have met an exceptional writer who is also a nasty human being, but that doesn’t mean they don’t exist. Writers of any caliber can be petty and arrogant. It’s foolish to think that that’s impossible, and foolish to refuse to recognize somebody’s talent simply because you disagree with the way they conduct themselves. I am more than willing to admit that sutlers can be one hell of a bitch sometimes (reserving judgment on ASG because I haven’t known her as long) but that said, I also think she’s a fantastic writer. We can disagree on the quality of her writing (I actually haven’t seen most of her older work), and you clearly have reasons to knock it other than her personality, but I honestly think that your first point has no ( ... )

So, yes, you can say that ASG picking on someone else’s ability to characterize is hypocritical. That doesn’t mean that the things she said were wrong, however. She brought up some valid points that nearly anyone familiar with the source material would have to agree with. I know she also implied that she would not make the same mistakes herself, and perhaps that’s the only thing you take issue with. In which case I should just shut up about it. But saying she and sutlers have no right to judge other people’s abilities? Listen, I do not consider myself an excellent writer. I know I have loads of room to improve and I make mistakes all the time. I also happen to do a lot of beta work, and I like to think that, although I may not personally be able to do some of the things I recommend to other authors, my suggestions still stand and my criticism is still valid. I do not need to be a fantastic author to be able to tell when other people are doing something wrong ( ... )

I actually really like both you and arantzain. Not that it's really relevant to anything, but I like how you conduct yourselves.

Thanks. I've been trying to stay rational in this whole debate. I can see that there are merits to both sides of the argument, and I'm just trying to get my opinion out there with as little bias as possible. I don't know if it's working, and I'm sure I've slipped up here and there, but I'm doing my best.

Ahahaa, and this is my first rant for you, isn't it?

I thought I was done with ranting, but apparently this isn't the case. Give me enough time and I'm sure I'll run across another situation that gets my bristles up. It seems to happen periodically whether I like it or not.

I think I'm done with this topic, though. I feel my objectives have been achieved.

Yes. I was a your-rant virgin, but I'm one no longer. XD

I've considered reading DGM simply because one of the characters looks like Haseo. And at least one of my friends likes it, so... Yeah.

=X I look forward to the next rant, then! Heh.

Funnily enough, that is how I got into the DGM fandom months ago. :P

i'm not even in the fandom and i'm watching this wankfest--or should i call it debate?--with fascination. that doesn't have any hidden meanings, it's just so interesting to read posts by intelligent people. even the comments are absorbing.

one thing i'm not clear on, forgive my limited fanon vocabulary--what does 'tl;dr' mean?

this was a terrific rant. i'm off to attempt to read the fics you linked.

"tl;dr" or "teal dear" stands for "Too Long, Didn't Read."

As a member of both the Harry Potter and the FMA fandom, I can tell you I've seen some pretty strong wank warsdiscussions about this very thing. I don't want to take sides here, but I do want to comment on your wording in this post.

I only want to say this: The way you nail on the head the how expat BNFs tend to manipulate and overpower their new, shiny, tiny fandoms they've become enamoured with after they've been mostly bounced from their old fandoms is, frankly, spot on. Especially about the heidipology after the fact.

I'm surprised I have never seen it put quite this way before. Oh, it's often hinted at; a locked post, or spoken of in private chats, but to come right out in a public post and call it?

Priceless.

Thank you.

Feel free to c&p, with context-appropriate edits, whenever you see a need to re-use the same argument. No credit needed, as I don't feel that I was coming up with anything amazingly original with it.
