“This isn’t your first time, Elizabeth. Relax!”
“That’s easy for you to say! I’m not that experienced, I’ll have you know,” Elizabeth Darcy grumbled.
Her husband laid a reassuring hand over her fumbling fingers. Through the thin leather of her riding gloves, Elizabeth could feel the security he offered. But she looked down at the dappled neck of the spirited mare and shuddered with unaccustomed nerves.
“I’m sorry, my dear,” Darcy apologized, seeing her unease. “I wanted to show you around those parts of Pemberley that are inaccessible by carriage and too far to reach in a day’s easy walking. But if Damson frightens you, we’ll think of something else.”
Elizabeth’s heart dropped at his disappointed tone. Giving into nerves was her mother’s tactic and nothing she wanted to emulate. Instead, she took a deep breath to steady herself. “There,” she announced brightly, holding the reins with greater confidence than she actually felt. “Just because I never rode anything but plow-horses before won’t stop us from viewing our home in a proper fashion. I’ll have faith in your choice and my skills.”
Darcy’s pleased smile as guided his mount down the path was all the reward Elizabeth desired, for now.
