Redemption and Other Fic Related Babble

Mar 09, 2012 11:18

I've been in fandom since 1995.  I started out in XF, writing under a different name.  I gained a bit of a following as an author of MSR--Mulder/Scully Romance to the uninitiated.  I used to describe my fics as Harlequin romances, starring Mulder and Scully.

An over-simplication, perhaps.  But close enough.

FWIW, I just don't think as many people are around anymore. I remember feeling sad about the number of comments on my last vid compared to previous vids, but the more I look, the more I see fewer comments everywhere.

But I applaud your decision to dip toe in pro water, whatever the impetus! Best wishes!

I know you're right. The fandom as a whole is past its peak in terms of sheer numbers. And I honestly don't want this to turn into a "poor me" moment, because by and large, I've done okay with the stuff I've created. It just happens reaction to my last fic was the kick in the pants I needed to try something else. Let's face it--feedback is addictive. :-)

And thanks so much for the kind wishes!

Oh, that's definitely how it came across, no worries.

Not only is SPN fandom past its peak, but LJ/DW fandom interaction in general is on the wane, as people tumbl or tweet or whatev.

I felt a similar "kick in the pants" emotion after my last vid, which is why I went on to video production. I was like, it's now or never, and this is not as satisfying to me as is once was. Not that I'll ever give of up vidding, which I love, nor is feedback the only reason to make fanworks. But it was time for a new challenge.

Of course, if you can make MONEY from your new challenge, all the more power to you! :D

It's finny how similar some parts of your history with writing and fandom are to mine. ;)

I think it's great that you are taking the plunge to epublishing your work. Keep the updates coming, I am very interested in doing something similar, but I don't have very many clues how to start, so I'm making notes of everything your friend suggested. ;D

I do have a question - why will you lose your feedback? You don't have to remove the fic from LJ, just change it to private, and you can keep your kudos for private warm fuzzies... :)

Also thanks for the heads up. I don't read much J2 (though I've co-written some, never posted), but I think I'd like to read yours. Of course if I get lazy and miss doign it now, I can always look forward to the epublished version! ;)

You are so wise. :-) I hadn't even thought about the option of making things Private. That is an excellent option!

I'll definitely post here about how things are going. I know I wouldn't be doing this were it not for my friend. She loves talking about this and we have another mutual friend who has published in hard copy and is now trying her hand at e-publishing too. So I've got this little community of people who are savvy in this regard, and intend to take full advantage of their experience.
