Taken from [Bad username or site: tsukikage85 @ livejournal]The BBC believes most people will have read only 6 of the 100 books here. How do your reading habits stack up? (My note - only 6??? I've read at least 29, with a few more I think I read, but am not 100% certain so I didn't mark them, and parts of a few others. Granted I read most of ( Read more... )

I probably agree with the BBC, even though it is not true for me. Most people don't read books AT ALL, so they've only read the 6 on the list they were forced to read in school (if they didn't just read the cliff notes). I've read somewhere in the mid-upper 20's also, but I think the list is skewed to count whole series as only one book. There's a lot of Sherlock Homes and Shakespeare to read.

There's also some weird double-dipping (33 Chronicles of Narnia; 36 The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe). Like you say, why are Shakespeare's works worth only a single Dickens work? And of course I'd have to complain that they include Harry Potter but not The Wheel of Time on that list. But all in all, fun list.

Yeah, I agree with you there that it's not a very balanced list. Most of the books are classics, but then you have the odd contemporary book like the Harry Potter series or The Time Traveller's Wife.

Still, I would have thought that 10 would be closer to the mark than 6.

I should up my number to somewhere in the 30s at least. :) I've been meaning to read Hitchhiker's Guide and Middlemarch for quite awhile but haven't gotten around to either yet.
