James hadn't meant to fall asleep. He was just going to finish his potions essay while waiting to make sure Lily made it up to the commons all right, but obviously potions was entirely too boring to stay awake through.

He sat up and groaned, rubbing a hand down his face and straightening his glasses. Writing essays in bed, well, wasn't good when you fell asleep and rolled over on top of them, he decided. What he'd managed to get done of his essay was crumbled and smeared and he gave up his quill for lost.

Luckily the map was all right and he lit his wand to peer down at it. Lily was ... still in the commons? Huh. He probably wouldn't be able to get back to sleep right away anyway, so he eased out of bed, tucked his wand into his pajama pants and wandered downstairs.

"Oi, Evans," he murmured when he reached the commons. He should have worked on sounding more surprised, but there was still some sleep in his voice. "Couldn't sleep?"

Lily jumped as if he'd startled her quite badly - which, really, he had. "Ah. No," she said quietly. "Not...not really." She frowned at herself though; if being greeted by someone in her own commons was going to make her jump like that, she didn't have a chance out in the hall where anyone she passed by could be her attacker.

"And where are you off to?" she murmured. It was well after midnight, and what was he doing up? She didn't really have it in her to summon any sort of authority to her voice though, and she turned her strangely dulled emerald eyes to him.

"Sorry," he grinned when she jumped, assuming she must've just been very absorbed in her reading.

"Wasn't off anywhere, really. I," didn't prepare for this very well. He glanced around briefly, "thought I left a book down here."

He shrugged and moved towards the couch closest to her chair, sprawling across it. Propping his head up on his elbow, he peered over at her and she looked ... off. "Any particular reason you couldn't sleep?"

She shook her head. There weren't a lot of people she was going to tell about this, and there were even fewer she wanted to tell about what had happened. Surprisingly, James wasn't on the list of people she was going to or wanted to tell.

"No reason," she said, though even she wouldn't have beleived that lie. Then again, she knew it was a lie. "You should get to bed," she murmured. "Don't you have an early class tomorrow?"

She felt something tickling her cheek, and she lifted up a hand to wipe away the tear. Well, lovely. Maybe he hadn't noticed?
