I have figured it out! The reason VD sucks and Damon is so awesome despite everything around him being lame is that he's the only one in on the joke! Everyone else on that show is taking this drivel way too seriously, thus Damon comes out looking fabulous because he is not a fool, unlike the rest of them. It all makes sense now
