insignificant bullets

I recently watched the Herzog documentary "Grizzly Man." Herzog is a man whose words are distinct and lively beings, flaking off his mouth and wafting off into the air with their own life forces and destinies. I have decided to write him a long-overdue letter:

Dear Mr. Herzog ( Read more... )

Any particular bedtime stories you'd like him to read?

You're brilliant, and make me smile.
I want to meet you, Minnie, and your children in person one day.
:)

Awww thanks. :D
I'm not sure I want to request any specific story, as much as see what he would chose and his reasoning behind it. Perhaps I'll ask him tomorrow, as we've had a daily interview session in my head during my morning showers (with the exception of that one day where I was a centaur in a concert hall playing the mirror game with some strange creature.)

Have you seen other Herzog films? His films are so strange. Like Even Dwarves Started Small, set in a mental institution with an all dwarf cast, or Querelle, his film of Genet's (homosexual criminal absurdist) novel...

I've seen many but not all. They are quite strange and memorable. I'm hoping that the Anthology Film Archives or Film Forum do a Herzog program because it would be fun to catch the remaining ones on the big screen.

Oh, and have you seen Caspar Hauser? If not, rent it soon!
It's still my favorite Herzog movie.

While I don't think it was epic, it was indeed an interesting character study. Treadwell was sort of troubled and innocent, and terribly obsessed. There are aspects of Treadwell that Herzog touches on where I'd love to see more in-depth exploration, but I realize he's only got the footage that he has. For someone not trained in filmmaking, Treadwell himself has a remarkably expressive shooting style. The tender moments, particularly with the foxes, make Treadwell look so pure and childlike in an often savage landscape, such that you can't help but see him as a fawn in a lion's den. There are other telling details, such as the fact that he never shoots his lover's face, that flesh out the information we have about him. All in all, not something I'd buy or evangelize, but I did find it intriguing.

Treadwell was a very fascinating person. Easy to see why Herzog would think so. Granted I am not typically disturbed that easily, but I don't think you'd have nightmares. There is a scene where Herzog himself even instructs Treadwell's friend to never listen to his last audio recording, which captured his death, and instead destroy the tape. In this manner, he spares everyone the most uncomfortable parts throughout the film.
