I just got a parking ticket in the mail today for not having a front license plate. I did not know you needed a front one if your car didn't come with front and back mounts on it. When I bought my car they told me putting a front one on it was optional. So either they lied to me, or the laws changed in the last 5 years and it totally escaped my ( Read more... )

They lied to you. It's been the law for decades. (I'm trying to find an article from Mr. Roadshow of the SJ Mercury News where he discusses it, but I can't find it right now.

However, the dealer is required to install the bracket. If the dealer didn't make you sign a form saying that you refused installation of the front bracket, you may have grounds for a small claims court lawsuit. :-)

mmmm.... they DID give me mounting supplies. I found them under my trunk. I also could technically do a fix- it for 10 dollars, but then I have to go through the trouble of getting a police officer to sign off on it. I probably could fight something, but y'know, you have to choose your battles.

oh and also, it was effective (that link you provided) Jan 1, 2005. I bought my car in 2003. =S
