Redistricting, the source of my pessimism

Really do click through the link below. This is how a nearly blue state gets turned back into Mississippi ... a worthwhile lesson no matter what state you are in.

Redistricting is undergoing a legal challenge (in a state district court I believe), and hopefully it won't have to make it the whole way to SCOTUS for a Voting Rights Act ruling. (I can hope. I'm not overly optimistic on this count, but if I don't hope, I'll cry.)

I saw that. I am skeptical, but honestly, I can't see any other way to undo the damage. If you guys can't overturn the crazy redraw before the 2020 census, by that time there may not be any way to fix things.

they did this in illinois too, but in the democrats' favor instead of the republicans. whoever is in power at the time of the redistricting, makes changes in ever more crazy ways in an effort to retain/increase their power.

there's a name for it, after one particularly crazy legislator from somewhere i forget. but yeah.

The Democrats in Illinois are in no way as far to the Left as the Republicans are to the Right.

In fact, this being the South, there are *lots* of Republicans in urban areas like Charlotte, Greensboro and Raleigh. But they're the wrong KIND of Republicans. They're RINOS, the kind who might cross the line to vote for a Democrat or stay home or vote Libertarian instead of Republican. And the military vote ... disaffected and split because of the disaster that was Iraq ... has also been divvied up. One of the districts they've cut up contains Fort Bragg and its environs.

The pro-business moderate Republicans are appalled. But their hands are tied because they too are in the wrong district.
