"Not a lot of people know I can do this," Hyewon said as she sat next to Suzy in the common room. Suzy smiled at her shyly, then her eyes widened when Hyewon set the Tarot cards down on the table in front of her.
"Why bring them out now?" Suzy asked quietly, glancing around the room. No one else seemed to even notice them.
"Because you look so worried about something, and I thought maybe I could help."
Suzy looked at the cards, then at Hyewon. "Um… okay."
"First, you shuffle them," Hyewon said, and Suzy picked them up. "Think about a question, anything you want to know about. Love, money, career, safety…." It hovered in the back of everyone's mind.
"A question?" Suzy repeated, retreating behind her hair.
"A concern, anything you'd like answered," Hyewon said. "For you. Don't ask about someone else."
Suzy smiled and bent her head over the cards, shuffling carefully. She did it three times, asking if she'd ever get over her shyness. Then she set the cards down on the table. "Cut them," Hyewon said.
Suzy obediently took about half of the cards and set them to the side, then put what had been on the bottom on the top.
Hyewon picked up the cards and began to lay them out, and Suzy watched, leaning forward in interest.
"Huh," Hyewon said, and touched a card - a young man with a bundle tied on a stick, a dog at his heels, and walking blithely off a cliff - and frowned.
"What?" Suzy asked, withdrawing a little.
"Well… this card changes the whole feel of the layout," Hyewon said, her frown deepening. Then she scowled and flopped back in the couch. "Who's your best friend?"
Suzy hesitated, looking at the cards, then turned to Hyewon. "Probably… KyuJong-oppa."
"Yeah." Hyewon sighed - a bit theatrically -and then gathered up the cards again. "This is him," she said, holding out the card she'd touched. The characters under it spelled out Fool. "Seriously, Suzy. I didn't think Tarot cards were affected by chance, not like face cards. I bet I can't read these for anyone here." She huffed and blew her hair out of her face, and then smiled. "Oh, well." She tucked the cards into a silk pouch and got up. "I'll be right back," she said, sounding a bit disappointed. "I'm going to put these away." She left the common room.
Suzy watched her go, stunned at the swiftness it had all happened in, and wondered if Hyewon were as unaffected as she pretended to be. Then she heard a cry of pain. A moment later, KyuJong limped into the common room, an incredulous look on his face, and sank down in the chair next to Suzy. "Hyewon kicked me," he said, his disbelief plain.
No, apparently not, and Suzy couldn't stifle a giggle - after which she explained to KyuJong what had happened so he'd stop looking so betrayed.
