Practice.
The feral kitten lay quiet in Hoon's arms, finally, her mother sitting at his feet looking like she'd rather the kitten weren't there, but resigned to it. "She'll be okay," Hoon told her, carefully getting into his bag for bandages and other supplies. He didn't know what had torn open the leg, but it looked like it hurt.
Mocking laughter distracted him, but only a bit; the cat taking off like a streak through the grass distracted him more, and he looked up to see two boys from his class heading back toward school. One of them nodded at him, the other (unsurprisingly) ignored him. "Seriously. He can't win a battle of wits because he hasn't got any, and it takes so long to translate anyway, it's hardly worth talking to him for it."
"So why bother?"
"Because he doesn't belong here." He spat the words out with venom Hoon usually heard in reference to mutants, but considering where he was....
He started off in the direction the two had come from, murmuring nonsense reassurances - it didn't matter what words he said, in this case, only the feeling - to the kitten he held, certain her mother would find her.
He came upon Eli pacing furiously, hands clenched at his sides, and stopped. The kitten didn't move, feeling safe, finally, and Hoon made a sudden decision. He really hoped he wouldn't regret this.
"Eli, do you have a minute? I need help."
Eli stopped short, and then slowly turned around. "What kind of help?" he asked, his accent stronger than Hoon had ever heard it.
"She's hurt," Hoon said, indicating the kitten. "I can't hold her and wrap her leg. Can you hold her? She'll stay calm."
Eli bit his lip, then nodded. "Standing or sitting?"
"Sitting, I think," Hoon said, and smiled. "Thank you."
Eli nodded shortly and sat down, making himself comfortable. Trying to keep the kitten calm, Hoon sat down across from him and passed her over, then carefully began to wrap her leg. It didn't take him long, and he set her down in the grass.
She meowed at him, then looked at Eli.
Blinking, Hoon looked up at Eli, who watched him, his eyes half closed. "Um... do you like cats?"
Eli straightened. "What?"
"Do you like cats?"
"Sort of, but I'm allergic to them."
Hoon bit his lip. "What do you think of taking medication for that?"
Eli breathed a laugh. "Why?"
"She likes you. She'd like to stay with you."
Eli stared at Hoon, then at the kitten, then back at Hoon. "You're kidding me, right?"
Hoon shook his head, half-smiling. "No. Look at her. She hasn't stopped watching you since you set her down."
Eli looked back at the kitten. "Can she?"
"Well, her mother won't like it, but she's old enough," Hoon said.
"But the school?"
"You could talk to someone about it. I know there were puppies around for a while, when Shim-sshi and his partner were attending."
Eli nodded absently, still watching the kitten. "Well... I guess it won't hurt to ask," he said.
The kitten climbed into his lap, then tried to jump onto his shoulder and couldn't quite make it. Hoon picked her up and put her there, and she curled up, her tail going around Eli's neck.
He really hoped they'd let Eli keep her; he looked relaxed and almost happy for the first time since Hoon had gotten to the school (perhaps barring the incident with Kevin's nightmare).
