I've been reading "Wild Justice" by Marc Bekoff and Jessica Pierce that talks about the moral lives of animals and presents a very scientific approach to the examination as to whether or not animals do, in fact, have emotions beyond very basic ones like, mad, sad, happy, etc ( Read more... )

With regards to why do the most extremely intense emotions present more often in childhood than less extreme emotions? It is not the emotional landscape that is immature; it is the individuals control of that landscape, and their control of what part of/how much of that landscape they broadcast to others that is immature. And so, we perceive that children tend towards the more extreme emotions. Not because the emotions are simple, but because the child's dexterity in dealing with those emotions is.
