An Inconvenient Truth

Jun 04, 2006 22:49

I just saw the film, "An Inconvenient Truth" last Friday, and I strongly encourage everyone I know to see this film. It's a documentary of Al Gore's lectures on Global Warming. PLEASE DON'T STOP READING HERE. This is not the robot-like Al Gore of 7 years ago, and more importantly, this is not a propaganda piece with a political message (a la ( Read more... )

haha, i love how your lj-entry morphed into a forum-debate. fantastic!
life at home is actually not that bad. there's not a lot to do in petaluma, so i got a "job" to keep me busy (in quotes because it's for my parents haha). can't wait to go back to berkeley though!

and yourself? how is mushroom-y Morgan Hill?

Morgan Hill is fine. Aaron Palm (do you know him?) and I climbed El-Toro, our local big hill, yesterday. I've been finding ways to amuse myself, and I have 1.5 jobs this summer. I seem to be enjoying them both so far. I saw some Petaluma kids at a conference for Recreation Leaders (one of my jobs) in San Rafael last weekend and I thought of you. I hope that all's well.

isn't it amazing how powerful movies can convey messages that aren't even true? take da vinci code for example...

devin, you might want to get ALL of the facts before getting gung-ho about an idea. i'm not bashing your ideals or anything or telling you how to think, but it's a good idea to understand the concept from both sides of the story before making a decision as to whether support or oppose it.

if you want an anti-global warming source, read Michael Crichton's State of Fear. (just an fyi, this book shows that there are more facts to prove that global warming doesn't exist than there are facts to prove that it does)

just thought i'd give you a heads up. :) no hard feelings

Um, I'm taking a cultural geography class right now, and not that I haven't learned any of this before I went to college, but it is indeed cery obvious that global warming is occuring. It may not be entirely the fault of the human race, but of things out of our control like the distance of the moon effecting the earth's tilt (which causes seasons to become shorter/longer), the slower rotatiion of the earth because of the moon (which isn't a big issue right now, its just slowly adding a mintue or so to earth's day each year which has been documented. Record have been found from years ago that earth's rotation had slightly shorter days.) And, pollution is helping things much either. The point is, global warming is actually happening, and the effects will not kill us until a little bit later so you're lucking out I suppose. It is partially our fault and partially the moon's fault, so we may as well help out where we can, (earth incase you were wondering) and actually cut down on pullution so at least are home looks decent before it ( ... )

True, though, and i must admit that global warming is actually happening, but, for instance, when one watches The Day After Tomorrow and comes walking out of the theater with his jaw dropped asking himself, "is this really going to happen to us?", it's quite probable that he: 1) has a subscription to Time, and 2) is misinformed about the facts surrounding global warming.

When we hear the term "global warming", we automatically relate it to glaciers melting, the usage of fossil fuels, and polar bears losing their homes. Obviously. Where did we obtain this information? *drum roll, please* THE MEDIA!!! When someone goes in and sees An Incovenient Truth and then comes out, he obviously would be changed. If he reads an edition of Time that says, and I quote, "The debate is over. Global warming is upon us- with a vengeance. From floods to fires, droughts to storms, the climate is crashing.", he would then know that since it's in print, it must be true. Devin's not dumb or anything, because there are so many more people like him who haven' ( ... )

wow. all of you guys make me laugh. it's funny how what you guys are really arguing is the affects the media. The media merely gives us choices. Whether you believe what the media says or not is your own issue. you can take as much interst in a subject as you want. perception is never complete.

secondly, livejournal isn't personal. if it was you wouldn't post it here. it's actually very public. the reason people usually post here is because they want some kind of response.

you guys are so harsh to each other. chill out dudes.
