My lovely friend dj has been introducing me to anime over the past couple of months. Everything he has suggested so far I've really enjoyed.
I started out with
Elfen Lied which I watched in under 24 hours. I absolutely bawled my eyes out during the last episode, and at random points for the rest of the evening. I had just split up with JC so was feeling rather emotionally fragile but I'm sure it would have reduced me to tears anyway. Only downside was I was left feeling like nothing I'd watch after would be as good. This will definitely be re-watched in the not too distant future.
Next came
Code Geass. I sympathised a lot with Lelouch from the start and felt that Suzaku was an idealistic idiot. Lelouch/Zero's relentless single mindedness was rather scary at times though, I'm not really sure how I felt about the character by the end. Season 1 was really enjoyable. I felt Season 2 floundered a bit half way through, the strategy angle had become too complicated and Lelouch/Zero was handed too many unforeseen advantages. At this point I kept watching mainly for character development and didn't pay full attention to all of it. It ended very strongly though, again I cried a lot.
Then
Death Note. I really enjoyed the chess-like strategy, particularly in the earlier episodes. I'm glad I watched this after Code Geass rather than before, Light totally outdid Lelouch in the god complex stakes and the complex strategizing was better done in Death Note.
Neon Genesis Evangelion was very enjoyable up to the end of episode 24. Mentally unstable, insecure 14 year olds piloting the worlds most powerful weapons, mmm dramay. I really loved Ayanami Rei (in a non-ephebiphilic manner). Episodes 25 and 26 mainly left me thinking 'where is my damn plot resolution'. Had I watched them not knowing about
End of Evangelion I would have been quite disappointed but after watching the film I understood the place of these two episodes and appreciated them more. The film was really good, it took some time to sink in, initially leaving me thinking 'WTF?!' . I think I'd gain a lot from watching it all a second time.
Also on the advice of dj watched
Spirited Away which was quite cute and enjoyable.
While surfing around
Anime Planet I came across
5 Centimeters per Second. I started watching it late at night while rather tired, and ended up getting dragged into IRC drama after the end of the first part. I enjoyed it enough however that I decided I should stop, wait till I was more awake, download the earlier Makoto Shinkai films and watch them in order.
Voices of a Distant Star was his first film (except for the short
She and her Cat), a 25 minute OVA produced single-handedly on his mac. I wasn't in the ideal frame of mind when I watched it (was feeling a bit emotionally cut off). It was quite enjoyable though, enough so that I found the manga so I could read the extended ending. I'll give it another watch sometime soon.
The Place Promised In Our Early Days was nothing short of wonderful *glee*. The animation was beautiful, the pacing was perfect, the characters were endearing... The plot was a little contrived but it didn't matter, the focus was character development and feelings and it conveyed these wonderfully. I can see this becoming one of my favourite films.
