Pragmatism! It's very popular in America, and states that your view of things will change those things such that if you had a different view it might be different. not neccessairly with things that you're not involved in directly, like Ivan, but with most anything that you are involved in directly. Like for instance, if you lived at home and thought that you had enough time to prepare the house for the hurricane, you could have greater chances of getting the house prepared, as opposed to if you didn't think you did.
In reality, neither positive thought or prayer are truly enough to sway the awesome force of nature that is a hurricane, but in these trying times it's the best we can do. And whoever says Christianity is "arrogant" has a lot of nerve. I'm assuming that by Christianity you mean prayer? Im not sure. But all I can say is I hope it does not hit your house either. Do all you can to fortify the house and prepare against the worst. Keep your eyes on the news, that's all you can do.
Prayer, defined in the most simplistic of terms, IS thinking positive thoughts. It's being positive that your request will be answered by the being from whom you are making this request. You may very well define it differently, and these two definitions come from people who identify themselves as Christians. Therefore, it's only meet that so many different views/definitions/etc. are expressed by so many different people in the world.
